Vianna de Motta, Jose

(1868-1948), Portugese pianist and composer.
He appeared widely in Europe and South america as a concert pianist, later return to Lisbon to assume directorship of the Lisbon Conservatory(1919-38).

Vieuxtemps, Henri

(1820-1881), Belgian violinist and composer, made concert tour at the age of 8, studied at Brussels, Vienna, and Paris, hailed as one of the greatest violinists, taught at the St. Petersburg and Brussles Conservatories, composed 7 violin concertos, and various violin pieces, cadenzas to Beethoven's violin concerto.

Villa-Lobos, Heitor

(1887-1959), Brazilian composer, studied in France. He returned to Brazil and founded the Brazilian Academy of Music, conducted in South Amercia and US.

Vives, Amadeo

Spanish composer of operettas and zarzuelas, studied in Barcelona, formed the influential chorus Orteo Catala, served as a organist at a covent, moved to Madrid, where he gained fame as a composer of operas and zarzuelas, besides zarzuelas, his other works include piano pieces and songs.

Wagner, Richard(1)

(1813-1883), German composer, he was influenced by Beethoven, enrolled at the Leipzig University, traveled to London, Paris, and settle briefly in Dresden. Due to his revolutionary activities, he fled to Zurich and continued to compose most of his major works which were performed in Munich, Weimar conducted by Liszt, van Bulow. In autumn of 1882, Wagner and his family left for Venice, and he died the following year.

Weber, Carl Maria von

(1786-1826), German composer, the founder of German national opera of Romantic School, and perphas a poineer in modern pianistic composition. he took lesson from Heuschkel and Michael Haydn, in 1813, served as a conductor at prague, and later to reoganized the Royal Opera in Dresden. he compiosed operas(Der freischuts, Euryanthe, Oberon), orchestral music etc.

Webern, Anton

Austrian composer and conductor, obtained doctorate degree from Vienna University, studied with Schoenberg, whose atonal musical system he adopted, but with some individual changes, one of the outstanding members of the Schoenberg circle. he composed 5 symphonies, orchestral and chamber music. He was the winner of Vienna State prize in 1924.

Weill, Kurt

(1900-1950), German(later US) composer, studied at the Berlin Hochschule, then with Busoni. After success of his 1-act opera "Der Protagonist", he has since composed highly versatile and ingenious modern stage works including "Mahagony", "Drei-Groschen". In 1935 he emmigrated to US and composed musicals with success, such as "Street Scene", "Lady in the Dark" etc.

Weiner, Leo

(1885-1960)Hungarian composer, studied composition at the Budapest School of Music Art, aafter travelling throughout Europe, then taught at the School of Music. His music was heavily influenced by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, his works including dramatic works, orchestral music, and chamber music.

Wieniawski, Henryk

Polish violinist and composer, debut at St. Petersburg at the age of 13, studied in Paris Conservatory; won 1st prize in 1846; in 1860 as solo-violinist for Czar, taught at the St. Petersburg and Brussels conservatories, toured US with Rubinstein. He composed 2 violin concertos, and violin pieces.
