Abendroth, Hermann


(1883-1956), German conductor, studied in Munich, conducted in Munich, Lubeck, and Essen, professor at the Cologne Conservatory, then music director there, conducted London Symphony, Leipzig Radio Orchestra, and Berlin Radio Orchestra.

Ackte, Aino


(1876-1944), Finnish soprano, studied with her mother first and then with Duvernoy in Paris, debut as Marguerite(Faust) at Paris Opera in 1897, then sang in London Covent Garden, and NY Met. She had a voice of purity and power, an excellent dramatic instinct and stage appearence, served as director of the Finnish National Opera, 1938.

Adam, Adolphe


(1803-1856), French composer, studied piano from his father first, then entered the Paris Conservatory to study organ, counterpoint, and composition, won the 2nd place of the Prix de Rome in 1825, taught at the Paris Conservatory, composed over 50 comique operas and a dozen of ballets, "Giselle" is the best known of his ballet as of today.

Alfven, Hugo


(1872-1960), Swedish composer and conductor, studied at the Stockholm Conservatory, studied violin and composition privately, violinist at the Royal Opera Orchestra, went to Dresden to study conducting, served as director of music at the Uppsala University. He composed 5 symphonies, 3 swedish rhapsodies, violin sonatas, and chamber music.
