Bloch, Ernest

(1880-1959), Swiss composer, studied violin in Geneva, then went for further study to Brussels, Munich, and Paris, lectured at the Geneva Conservatory, in 1916 he emigrated to US, taught at the Mannes Music School(1917-19), later became director of the Cleveland Institute of Music, and taught at the San Francisco Conservatory, and at Barkeley(1940-52), he composed Schelomo(a rhapsody for cello and orch.), opera(Macbeth), a violin concerto, concerto grosso, 5 string quartets, violin, viola, cello, piano pieces.
