Benda, Franz

(1709-1786), Czech composer and violin virtuoso, born in Bohemia, went to Dresden, sang in the court chapel choir and began study violin and viola, returned to Prague in 1723 and played violin in Frederick II's orchestra, he was famous for his cantabile playing. He composed symphonies, concertos, sonatas, and other chamber music.
