Bartok, Bela


(1881-1945),Hungarian composer and ethnomusicalogist, noted for researches in folk-music and idiom; studied at the Budapest Academy, later taught there, visited US and lectured there. Around 1906 he and Kodaly began collecting folk music in villages of Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Serbia, and began to assimilate both the spirit and the substance of these melodies in his own music. He was a profilic composer, composed stage, orchestral shamber music, concertos etc. best known piece is 'Concerto for Orchestra' which was commissioned by Boston orchestra.
