Barber, Samuel

(1910-1981), American composer, studied piano from childhood, led a high school orchestra and was organist at a local church, thenentered Curtis Institute to study composition, also taught at Curtis, won Rome prize and 2 Pulitzer Prizes, composed 1 symphonies, 1 violin concerto, 1 cello concerto, and a piano concerto, operas(Vanessa, Anthony and Cleopatra), a string quartet(Adagio for string).
