Balakirev, Mily

(1836-1910), Russian composer, took piano lesson at young age, entered the University of Kazan to stdy mathematics, but continued to perform piano and teach, began conducting at the newly opened Free School of Music in St. Petersburg, later named director of the Free School of Music, and director of the imperial court. Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Mussorgsky are often referred as "The Mighty Five"
