Gounod, Charles


(1818-1893), French composer, studied at Lycee St. Louis, then entered Paris Conservatory; won Priz de Rome in 1837 and studied in Rome, returned to Paris and became organist at the Missions etrangeres. He composed operas(Faust, Romeo et Juliet), 2 symphonies, church music, songs.
