Foster, Stephen Collins

(1826-1864), American composer, he was largely self-taught in music, learning to play flute and piano and compositional technique, the success of "Oh ! Susanna" and "Uncle Ned," both published in New York, determined him to become a full-time songwriter and achieved legendary status as America's best-loved songwriter - "My Old Kentucky Home", "Beautiful Dreamer", "Old Black Joe".
