Massenet, Jules


(1842-1912), French composer, studied at the Paris Conservatory; won Prix de Rome in 1863 and subsequently studied in Rome; taught at the Paris Conservatory from 1878 until his death, his operas were successful and gaining popularity throughout in France, Italy and America during his time. He composed operas(Thais, Manon, Cherubin, Le jonleur de Notre-Dame etc), incidental music, orchestral suites, and songs.
