Ponselle, Rosa


(1897-1981), American soprano, began as vaudeville singer alongside with her sister, made her Metropolitan debut opposite Caruso in 1918; she remained the foremost prima donna there until 1937,
She was active in teaching; directed the Baltimoe Civic Opera Company. Her voice was regarded as one of the best in the century.
