Toscanini, Arturo


(1867-1957), Italian/American conductor, studied cello at Parma Conserv., debut as a conductor in Rio de Janeiro as a replacement. In 1898 he became leading conductor at La Scala, also conducted at Bayreuth, Metropolitan Opera, in 1937-1954 he directed the NBC Orchestra. He retired in 1954.
